When you are planning your backpack adventure you need to consider what supplies are needed for the trip. On a longer trip this is particularly important and you will need to plan carefully. Be sure to choose a backpack that is large enough for the things you need to take. It must also be comfortable so be sure to try out different backpacks and see which is right for you. It's a good idea to load supplies into the backpack and not to try them when they are only empty.
So what supplies will you need to put into your backpack to take with you on a trip? One of the most important things you will need for a backpacking adventure is a map and compass. There no point in going on the adventure if you wont be able to find your way! An updated topographical map of the area in which you'll be backpacking, and specifically the trails you'll be hiking and the sites in which you may decide to camp, will make a big difference in ensuring you don't get lost. However, make sure you can understand and properly read the map before you embark on your backpacking-in-the-wild adventure.
Just as important as a detailed map of the area is a compass. Your compass is an essential navigational tool when walking unfamiliar trails. It is very easy to get off your trail for whatever reason and to suddenly get turned around, after all most of your surroundings are unfamiliar to begin with and they do all look the same somewhat. You must make sure you know how to use one though. It will not be much good to you if you happen to get yourself lost out in the wild. However, make sure you use your compass right from the moment you enter the wild back country, as it will help you to stay on course and help you avoid getting lost in the first place.
Other basic essentials to add to your pack are a first aid kit, tent, extra clothing in case of weather change, extra food, sunglasses and a flashlight. If indeed you do become lost, what do you do? Stay calm and don’t go anywhere. You may need to build your fire and set up your tent. Try to relax and have a meal if at all possible. Waiting is always hard under stressful circumstances, but try to keep your stress level down. Remember help is on the way and of course you have already sent your distress signal at this time.
Finally, as you're backpacking, take keen notice of your surroundings-watch for specific landmarks you can use as a guide if you happen to go off trail or get lost, and you need to backtrack. Safety in the wilderness is everyone's priority and by knowing the rules and the essentials to pack the life you save may very well be your own.
